How to Make the Most of Your Visit to Dollywood: Tips from a Very Happy Guest

I was ecstatic when an invitation from Dollywood landed in my inbox shortly after the hurricane—generously encouraging my family to take a break, have some fun, and enjoy ourselves. It meant the world to us. Dollywood already held a special place in my heart, but this just made it personal.

So when Easter weekend rolled around, I knew it was the perfect time to take them up on their offer. We packed up, hit the road, and headed into the Smoky Mountains for a day full of joy, music, funnel cakes, and memories that I’m still smiling about.

If you’re planning your own trip to Dollywood, here are my top tips to help you get the most out of your day:

1. Arrive Early (and Wear Comfortable Shoes)

Dollywood opens at 10 AM, and trust me—getting there when the gates open is key. You’ll beat the heat, avoid long lines at popular rides, and have time to take it all in without feeling rushed. The park is large, so wear sneakers or something supportive—you’ll be doing a lot of walking!

2. Download the Dollywood App

This is a game-changer. The app has ride wait times, a map of the park, show schedules, dining options, and more. It helps you stay organized and spontaneous at the same time—two things that don’t usually go together when you’re theme-parking with kids.

3. Catch the Live Shows

Yes, the rides are thrilling, but Dollywood’s soul is in its music. From gospel and bluegrass to country hits and seasonal performances, the shows are top-notch. If you need a break from the rides or the sun, this is the way to cool down and get inspired.

4. Don’t Skip the Cinnamon Bread (You’ll Thank Me Later)

Head straight to Grist Mill for the iconic cinnamon bread—it’s legendary. Warm, gooey, and made fresh all day long, it’s one of those things you’ll dream about long after you leave. Pro tip: order extra to take home (if it lasts that long).

5. Use Rider Swap If You Have Littles

Dollywood is incredibly family-friendly, even if you have younger kids who can’t ride the bigger coasters. The Rider Swap program lets one adult ride while the other waits with the child, and then switch without getting back in line. It’s magical.

6. Bring a Backpack with the Basics

A few essentials go a long way: sunscreen, water bottles, ponchos (yes, it rains in the Smokies), and a small first aid kit. You’re allowed to bring snacks if you have dietary needs—just be mindful of park rules.

7. Visit During a Festival

Dollywood’s seasonal festivals are next-level. We were lucky enough to visit during the I Will Always Love You Music Festival, and right now, they’ve transformed the park for the Umbrella Sky Festival—and it is STUNNING. Colorful umbrella canopies, themed treats, and dreamy photo ops around every corner.

8. Make Time for the Rides—but Plan Your Strategy

Lines for Lightning Rod, Wild Eagle, and Mystery Mine can get long, especially midday. If rides are a priority, knock them out early or later in the evening. You can also purchase TimeSaver Passes if you want to skip the lines.

9. Don’t Miss Wildwood Grove

Especially if you’re visiting with kids, this area is like a whimsical dream. There’s something for everyone—gentle rides, splash areas, butterfly theming, and even nighttime lighting that gives it a little extra magic after sunset.

10. Stay Hydrated, Stay Chill, and Don’t Try to Do It All

This one’s hard when everything is so fun—but the best days at Dollywood are the ones where you let go of the checklist and lean into the moments. Ride what you can, eat what makes you happy, and if something doesn’t happen? That’s what next time is for.

PS: Splash Country Opens Soon!

Dollywood’s Splash Country water park opens in just a few short weeks—and yes, we’ll be back. Stay tuned for my full breakdown of both parks, including my all-time favorite top tips, snacks, and kid-friendly must-dos.

Happy 40th Anniversary, Dollywood!

Whether it’s your first visit or your fortieth, there’s always something to love. Dolly’s heart is all over that park—and now mine is too.
